Quoting for success
Margaret Alcorn, National CPD Coordinator
This year's annual CPD Managers' Conference took as its theme 'Building Confidence, Capacity and Community' and all participants were asked to bring along their favourite quote.
You can see the offerings on the CPD Team blog, but as you would expect from such a rich network they range from the profound to the slightly silly.
I really liked: "I opened my mouth to say no and it came out no problem".
The only "doubler" we got was from Einstein - "Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." I wonder where that thought came from.
The conference was, of course, more than a series of quotes. We had a good session on confidence (What is it? How do you build it?), some personal testimony
on leading professional development in an authority as well as a rousing rattle round the themes of measuring impact and a stimulating discussion on the challenges for CPD managers and school leaders in leading Curriculum for Excellence. We were reminded that: "The World is Flat" (Thomas L Friedman) and so we had a look at CfE Kiwi-style, where they wrestle with many familiar issues. Together we brought life to Senge's statement that: "A shared vision is not an idea. It is rather a force in people's hearts, a force of impressive power". This was clearly evident in the discussions, the reflections, the mood and the general conviviality of the conference.
At the end of the day however, the themes and the mood of the conference can be summed up by Ella Grant: "A school's best resource is its teachers." Of course it is, and let's not forget it.
