Culture and arts case study: The Lighthouse, Glasgow
An enlightening experience for all involved.
Located in a converted Charles Rennie Mackintosh building in Glasgow, The Lighthouse, Scotland's Centre for Architecture, Design and the City provides an unrivalled chance to experience architecture and design at first hand. With courses designed and delivered by practicing design professionals, The Lighthouse's education programme aims to actively engage learners in the design process.
A yearly series of intensive Architecture and Design Academies offer young people an opportunity to prepare for a career in the design industry and for entry into related higher education courses. From den-building to designing sustainable furniture pieces, a range of workshops offered throughout the academic year also allow teachers and students to explore the multi-disciplinary nature of architecture and design.
In addition to a core programme of workshops and courses, The Lighthouse is involved in projects such as Senses of Place: Building Excellence, funded by the Scottish Government, which aims to engage school users in the design of their school buildings within the context of the Curriculum for Excellence.
At the heart of The Lighthouse's award winning education programme is the belief in the capacity of architecture and design to engage, challenge and entertain. Over the last ten years, The Lighthouse has continued to strive to support its learners in becoming more confident, creative and enterprising individuals and to inspire the design professionals of the future.
