A new Council for a new era

Members of the first fully independent Council of GTC Scotland have now been elected

The first fully independent Council (the Thirteenth Council) of the General Teaching Council for Scotland takes up office on 2 April 2012. With a view to introducing a rolling programme of elections, nominations and appointments to the Council, members of the new Council will serve from 2 April 2012 for a period of either two years or four years.

Elected, nominated and appointed members will make a strong contribution to the development of GTC Scotland as the world's first fully independent, self-regulating professional body for the teaching profession and to the direction of the new, independent Council in a number of important areas. This will include taking forward a fully supportive system of Professional Update for teachers, promoting teacher professionalism and accomplished teaching, developing GTC Scotland policy in respect of current national issues (where these impact on professional standards in teaching) and ensuring that GTC Scotland maintains and improves high standards in the regulation of the teaching profession.

Voting in the Council Election closed at noon on Wednesday 14 December 2011. View the full results to find out which registered teachers have been elected to serve on the new, independent Council at www.gtcs.org.uk/election.

During the voting process in the Council election, we stated that we would donate 15p to charity for each vote cast online.

As a result of the 2,048 registered teachers who voted online (just under 19 per cent of the total votes cast), we will donate £307.20 to Action for Children Scotland.
