Coaching tips

In education, change is the only constant. So how can we better manage this process?

Many of us fear change and are quite happy with the way things are now. However, defending the status quo is a losing battle. You only have to look at the speed that the world around us is moving to understand that standing still is not an option. So we can embrace change, or we can get swept away by it.

What you need is faith in a big idea, the nerve to lead others and a shared goal that resonates strongly with you and those you lead. Being passionate about change will inspire those you lead to be passionate too.

Passion is contagious. If you don't believe that, try it! The next time you are in the staff room, talk enthusiastically about something you feel passionate about. Notice how you feel and how the other person reacts.

Essential to your mission is the skill and attitude to win hearts and minds and the best bit is that you can promote your big idea and form a team of supporters without needing any leadership responsibility.

In fact, while sometimes useful, authority can often get in the way. Leaders can, and should, emerge from anywhere in your school. The best leaders lead opinions. The best leaders lead opinions in line with your school's vision towards shared goals.

This year we at BlueKiteCoach have discovered the thrill of leading and have been amazed at how sharing my passion for a big idea has attracted the support from many like-minded people.

Our big idea

"By 20 July 2015 every primary school staff room will be a place that all staff enjoy being in because they experience a positive learning environment where daily support and challenge from other staff is actively encouraged by all."
