A more rewarding experience for all

Teaching Scotland continued its support of the Scottish School Magazine Competition, when editor Daniel Lambie and Head of Communications at GTC Scotland, Glenise Borthwick, presented the editorial category winners with an award at a ceremony earlier in the summer.

Rhys Harper, one of the students who attended the ceremony, sent us this report of the event:

Opportunities can be rare. In media work, this is especially true. The Scottish School Magazine Competition, produced and managed by PPA Scotland, could well be considered a golden ticket for young people in Scotland to develop their skills in business and writing.

Twelve awards were presented to the winning schools. With more than 200 pupils in attendance at Our Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh for the event, competition was fierce.

A variety of impressive publications had been produced by schools, showcasing the skills of the pupils involved. These ranged from hard copy magazines sold outside the school to online, not-for-profit digital magazines.

The event was hosted by BBC Radio Scotland presenter and former international rugby player, John Beattie, on the 17th June.

A range of publishing industry experts and university representatives participated in the magazine and careers exhibition.

"The high standard of entries highlights the commitment of both pupils and teachers to the Scottish School Magazine Competition. Being involved in a school magazine contributes to the development of important skills which are all relevant to life beyond school," said Sandra Ewen MBE of the Scottish Government's Learning Directorate, who has been involved in the project since its inception.

"These young people have all had the opportunity to take part in a project which brought real context to their learning and allowed them to develop skills for learning, life and work."
