Flagship IT project still glowing

Recent announcements about the procurement process for the next phase of Glow have potentially thrown into doubt the future of the flagship ICT project.

However, Dr Maxwell insists that one of Education Scotland's main purposes is to lead innovation in Scottish Education, not least in the fast-moving arena
of ICT.

He said Education Scotland encourages teachers to use technology more and more in their teaching practice and to develop the use of technology in learning generally. For example, within Glow there are 108,401 communities of practice and other on-line forums, and more generally, there are 456,941 education professionals and young people successfully using Glow to develop and improve learning.

"The move to halt the procurement of the next phase of Glow is a recognition of how far and fast technology is moving. No-one could have foreseen a few years ago how open sourced software and social networking tools could have become such an integral part of teaching practise. We need to recreate Glow to reflect this, and also be adaptable enough to respond to and take advantage of future developments."The next version of Glow will remain an integral part of the profession and a great platform for teachers and others to share and develop experience and practise for the good of everyone."
