The benefits of outdoor learning

Scottish Youth Hostelling Association (SYHA) held a conference recently to promote residential youth experiences and provide a platform for educationists and youth workers to update skills, share best practice and explore and explode the myths that can create fears around leading residential youth trips.

The charity's Chief Executive Officer Keith Legge said: "We believe in and understand the benefits to young people of outdoor residential experiences."

Alasdair Allan, Minister for Learning and Skills, said: "Outdoor learning creates some of the most memorable experiences for young people. The variety of experiences that are available through adventure activities - helping connect with our natural heritage as well gaining independence and confidence being away from home - can be really character building."
